Mental Health Minutes

Since 2017, SAPA and the Tucson Museum of Art have partnered to explore art and psychology in the museum’s galleries. This summer, we have begun to collaboratively develop content in response to the unique challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The end result? Brief Mental Health Minutes that explore the intersection of creativity and mental health, featuring a variety of SAPA members and a selection of works in the TMA galleries.

Mental Health Minute: Meditation

Dr. Pat Penn is a psychologist who worked over 26 years at La Frontera Center in Tucson. For 15 years she led meditations and taught mindfulness at Miraval resort in Catalina. For TMA, she came into the exhibition Southwest Rising to record a 5-minute guided meditation – a journey to the Grand Canyon with Merrill Mahaffey’s painting Deep Canyon Morning (1984).

Mental Health Minute: Dealing with Grief

Dr. Courtney Schuneman is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Northwest Tucson, specializing in trauma, grief and loss. In conversation with Dr. Marianna Pegno, TMA’s Curator of Community Engagement, Dr. Schuneman talks about grief in relation to the pandemic with a focus on three key ideas: how it manifests emotionally, how your body reacts to it and strategies for dealing with grief.

Mental Health Minute: Creativity, Culture and Diversity

TMA’s Marianna Pegno, curator of community engagement, talks with Dr. Roxana Samaniego, a psychologist with Southern Arizona Psychological Association, about strategies for constructive and respectful communication about issues like difference, privilege and social justice.
