Graduate Student, Intern, and Fellow – Student Membership Benefit

  • Education: Membership gives those in training access to low-cost presentations on topics highly relevant to clinical, counseling, and school psychology practice. SAPA provides informal discussion groups on various topics relevant to students, interns and fellows.
  • Networking: SAPA members are a welcoming and collegial group, always happy to consult with trainees on broad professional issues including professional development, practice, ethics, self-care, financial/marketing, and other career issues. Membership events and parties are welcoming to students interested in networking with all members.
  • Leadership: Student members have the opportunity to serve on the Board and committees and learn about the governance of a non-profit professional organization. This is a great way to build your CV. There are many opportunities to engage in community outreach and get to know the community we serve.

Graduate school, practicum, internship, and fellowship are times of intense focus on an area of specialty. Involvement with our local professional organization gives trainees an opportunity to appreciate the richness and versatility of careers in psychology, learn how valuable our professional skills and services are to those in the community, discover new passions and areas of interest, and develop leadership skills to better serve their communities—academic, industry, and the public—in their professional careers.

SAPA membership provided me with a connection to so MANY psychologists in Tucson whom I consulted when I had concerns about clients, about potential ethical dilemmas, when I needed to make referrals to psychologists who had different skill sets than I had... and not the least was that SAPA membership provided connections to psychologists I am proud to call friends. Lifelong friends.

Being a member of SAPA has allowed me to see just how wide the variety of services rendered can be for psychologists in practice. Additionally, attending talks and meetings about specific topics has furthered my knowledge about specific areas and current issues in psychology, such as moving to the new DSM, learning about bullying, etc. Although not often considered, I've gained some practical knowledge on the administrative workings of being a professional psychologist as well, including learning about the process by which professional psychologists give and receive referrals, and obtain CE units.

(updated 2024) Well, the friendships indeed delivered on their promise, and the feeling of being valued kept growing …likely a result of volunteering on various SAPA Committees, which I very strongly recommend for new members as well as old. The affiliative- and accomplishment needs of people like us are embracingly met, and the professional connections and synergy flow generously--a function, I suspect, of the effort put in. It’s totally worth it: be part of your psychology community.

(2014) I found SAPA to be extremely welcoming and helpful when I first arrived in Tucson 3 year ago... my SAPA involvement has allowed me to get to know fellow psychologists in the area much faster and more thoroughly than I could have done any other way. It's given me a sense of belonging and of being valued as a colleague, and it has led to the beginnings of some very promising personal friendships as well...
